"I just like being home."
The perspective of a child is so refreshing.
Tonight, we wrapped up a four-day birthday celebration for my 11-year-old son by eating at our regular Mexican restaurant. Afterward, it was ice cream at the awesome little ice cream joint down the street (it’s even better than the place I wrote about a few weeks ago).
To top it off, we took my mother-in-law with us for a walk around the capitol building. The Kansas State Capitol building is a beautiful example of old architecture with an impressive bronze statue of a Kanza Indian aiming his arrow at the North Star. It is a crown jewel in a generally mediocre small city (I’m just being honest; I’ve lived here for 18 years, so I’ve earned the right).

It was a great, early spring evening with a beautiful sunset as icing on the cake. As I was getting my 7-year-old daughter to sleep, she told me something so profound:
“I just really like being home.” This was a surprising revelation from her because she is my social butterfly. At the end of the day, we’re all usually looking for the stability of our home. We want our warm, familiar bed. We like our collections of whatever because it’s ours.
It’s for this exact reason that I truly believe if you are serious about building your own business, you need to be rooted somewhere. Just because you can theoretically work from anywhere does not mean you should.
We humans are the consummate creatures of habit. We work best in our familiar surroundings. Being a digital nomad sounds great until it doesn’t. Writing on the road is hard! All of your familiar cues are gone. The things that kept you on track.
If you really want to succeed in your business, pick a spot and settle down. You’ll thank me later.
