I want to write better. What do?
Writing for the sake of writing is a mediocre solution
Writing is the most useful skill you will ever learn, and I mean that. There is not anything in your life that won’t be made better through being a better writer.
Relationship? Handwrite her a letter.
Small business owner? No matter the market, better writing translates to more sales.
Better writing grows your social media channels, your email lists, or just about anything else you want to grow. In one pretty extreme example, writing an excellent book catapulted Mr. JD Vance into the position of vice-presidential candidate. Yeah, that happened.
Is it likely to happen for you or me? I have no idea (ok, definitely NOT for me). But what I do know from a lot of personal experience is that learning how to write will change the trajectory of your life if you want it to. You don’t have to; you can sit on your work and claim it’s for mental clarity or whatever, but seriously, what’s the point in that?
My mental clarity comes from knowing that someone pays me to put words on digital paper, and after those people are done paying me to do that, other people will do the same.
So, what do you do to get better at this universe skill? This is only my opinion, but it worked for me: put yourself in the arena. You want to get paid to write? Then place yourself squarely in the market of ideas and start peddling your mental goods.
Get on Upwork. Get on Fiverr. Follow good sources of gigs like the Freelance Opportunities! newsletter. Indeed and Monster are also good sources of freelance writing gigs, as is LinkedIn. Look, if you can use the google on the internet machine, you can figure out how to find gigs.
But that’s about it: if you want to become a better writer (which you should), you need to put yourself out there. And don’t wait to hit some metric to start; there are no magic numbers or solutions in the game. You just get yourself out there and do.
Make sure to keep your eyes on my Gumroad store. I’ll be dropping more material on there in the next few weeks, so don’t miss out.
