Unemployable

There is no plan B for some of us

My friend Wade (Hi Wade 👋) had a great email today. He was making the point that there are those of us who are essentially unemployable because we are square pegs. It’s not that we don’t have the necessary skills; it’s that we simply operate on a completely different plane of existence.

That is me taking some creative license with what he said, but that’s more or less the size of it.

So, what makes us unemployable?

Probably a bunch of things. We’re all uniquely different people with different things that make us tick. But more than anything else, it’s the drive to do things the way they work for us.

This ain’t it, chief

Most of you probably already know this, but I spent a long time in the military and then working for it. If you don’t know anything else about the military, here’s one thing to sum up the entire experience: there are no individuals.

Hollywood loves to play up the rugged individualists like George S. Patton but the truth is he was an anomaly. He advanced because he always won, and that’s all that matters in times of war.

But there was only one Patton. The rest of the military experience is that of a cog in the machine.

I loved my time in uniform…or at least I told myself I did. But truthfully, most of my years were soul crushing. Working for idiots and mindless drones will suck the life out of you. Even a job you like and a career you think you love becomes a burden. It did for me.

For us relatively few people in the solo content creator/solopreneur/freelancer community, working for a moron is a living hell. That coworker who is a stickler for the rules, no matter how dumb they are? Enough to make us scream.

No, when we make our break from the corporate (or public) nightmare, it’s never quite soon enough. And I want to encourage you to make your break if this is you. I have nothing to sell you (right now 😉) but I do hope you believe that you can slip off your velvet handcuffs. If you want it bad enough, you’ll make a way.

Until next time friends, keep your goals written down and your eyes on the prize.
