Back on old land

Thoughts on buying my childhood property

A couple of days ago, my wife sent me a listing for raw land off of the Facebook marketplace. She thought it was adjacent to her grandparent’s property, and she recognized the address. But it wasn’t; it was the address of my childhood home.

The old farmhouse used to be right here. It looks better without it.

The house is gone now (good riddance), and a lot of the trees have been clear cut and piled up to burn. It’s just land now. Well, I had to go look at it; I didn’t really get any closure on it when it left the family a couple of years ago, and I needed some.

Now, before you think I went out there to waste the listing agent’s time (I grew up with her), I didn’t. My wife and I are looking at it as an investment opportunity to drop our second RV travel trailer on it and rent it out on VRBO & Airbnb. But that’s not the point.

Legacy is important

The property isn’t all that cheap (~$27k per acre). I could definitely find a cheap plot of land, although it wouldn’t be as convenient as that place (it’s nestled in between two very popular lakes and is less than a mile for boat access on the Kansas River). No, it’s deeper than that.

This is about legacy. This is about an important piece of my childhood that didn’t stay in the family, and as they say, family is everything. It’s about legacy.

It’s about taking the opportunity to make right something that needs to be made right. That property should have never left the family, and I am going to make it right.

What’s the point of building if not to build a legacy?

I don’t think for one second that you can separate vocation from legacy. My dad was the smartest guy I’ve ever met. He studied mechanical engineering but never finished the degree. Instead, he delivered newspapers and died young. I am not speaking ill of the dead, just illustrating that his legacy could have been so much better if he hadn’t been hell-bent on self-sabotage.

If the broccoli-headed Hustletards™️ want to rake in cash and move to LATAM, fine with me. Maybe they will start a legacy there or something; I don’t really care. In digital creator circles, I am a dinosaur (41), but that is also my strength: mileage has given me a lot of perspective. The internet allows you to create unbelievable wealth if you can leverage it, but what’s the point of making WiFi money to just parade it on the ‘Gram?

Use this opportunity as a gift to build a legacy. Create and buy tangible things that can be handed down as inheritance. Turn around decisions that will have long-term ill effects. And for the love of God, hold on to important assets!
